Millions of Rwandans Head to the Polls in Presidential and Parliamentary Elections

Millions of Rwandans began casting their ballots today in a historic dual election for both the presidency and parliamentary seats. Across 2,433 polling stations, over nine million registered voters participated in the democratic process, marking a significant moment as presidential and legislative elections are held simultaneously for the first time.

Polls opened promptly at 7:00 am local time and are scheduled to close at 3:00 pm, with counting expected to commence immediately thereafter. Initial results are anticipated as counting progresses throughout the day.

Incumbent President Paul Kagame, representing the ruling Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF Inkotanyi), leads the presidential contenders alongside Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda (DGPR) and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana. Kagame, who has held office since 2000, seeks re-election following his overwhelming victory in 2017.

In the parliamentary race, 589 candidates are vying for 80 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. The election includes seats reserved for women, youth, and people with disabilities, with additional indirect elections scheduled for tomorrow.

The outcome of these elections will shape Rwanda's political landscape for the next term, with observers closely monitoring the voting process for transparency and adherence to electoral standards.

These elections are pivotal for Rwanda's future direction, as citizens exercise their right to choose their leaders amidst a backdrop of political anticipation and civic engagement.
