Fake Fertilizer ScandalBackground and Policy

Officials at the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF) are facing accusations of corruption, with claims that they are favoring a company linked to a prominent city lawyer for the supply and delivery of fertilizers.

Sources within MAAIF, unhappy with the situation, reveal that decision-makers are in the final stages of signing a framework agreement with this favored firm, if not already completed. The lawyer in question, hailing from Ntungamo district, is rumored to have possible connections to the first family.

It is reported that his interests at MAAIF are being protected by a minister known for his deep admiration of long-horned Ankole cattle, rivaled only by General Museveni. The controversial firm, which has reportedly never imported a single kilogram of fertilizer, is being favored over more experienced industry players.

Fake Fertilizer Scandal

In a related development, heads are expected to roll after reports surfaced about a company supplying fake fertilizer worth billions, linked to Kenya. Despite warnings, MAAIF bosses proceeded with the deal, resulting in farmers receiving fertilizer mixed with stones. Some affected farmers have privately complained to President Museveni, and sources indicate he is eager to address the issue.

Background and Policy

In 2016, the Cabinet approved the National Fertilizer Policy (NFP) after research showed that Uganda’s soils required fertilizers to boost agricultural yields. This policy, under MAAIF’s mandate, has seen the government and private sector collaborate on the importation and distribution of fertilizers.

MAAIF has been contacted for a comment on these allegations.
