Gov't Moves to Prohibit Corrupt Individuals from Holding Public Office

The government plans to amend the Anti-Corruption Bill to block individuals convicted of corruption from holding public office, according to Attorney General Kiwanuka Kiryowa. He believes this measure will deter government officials from engaging in corrupt practices. Estimates from the Inspectorate of Government suggest that Uganda loses up to Shs 9.7 trillion annually due to corruption.

Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka emphasized that preventing corrupt individuals from public service will serve as a deterrent. This proposal was discussed during the recent Cabinet Introspection Retreat in Kyankwanzi.

President Museveni, addressing the retreat, highlighted the economic impact of corruption, citing the Inspectorate of Government’s estimate of Shs 9.7 trillion lost annually.

“Corruption remains a significant challenge in Uganda. The IGG estimates that the country loses Shs. 9.7 trillion annually due to corruption. This is unacceptable,” he stated.

He also urged the judiciary to abolish bail for suspects accused of serious crimes, including corruption, emphasizing the need for swift and accountable justice in such cases.
